This 90-minute guided adventure offers rare access to the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier — typically closed to the public — and features hands-on science activities, including scooping plankton and dissecting squid, as well as learning about cutting-edge shark research, all set against the backdrop of a stunning sunset. “Few people get a chance to see behind the scenes of the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier,” said Matthew Arrollado, public programs coordinator. “Not only will you get a chance to see how the pier operates, but also a chance to see how the pier supports so many research projects that focus on the sea, land and sky.” New this year, the aquarium is highlighting the Scripps CO₂ Program and the necessary research they do on Scripps Pier. Participants will receive an in-depth look at how the program operates and what the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide means for the oceans, both locally and globally. The September dates already are wait listed. First availability is for Oct. 5. The walks, with two scheduled most weekends, continue through Dec. 14. The tour requires guests to walk the length of the pier. All participants must be ages 9 or older and are encouraged to dress in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tours meet at the entrance of the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier and do not include transportation. Sunset Scripps Pier Walks can be booked individually or bundled with aquarium admission for a discounted price if purchased together. Tickets are on sale and cost $30 for aquarium members, $35 for non-members as part of the bundle, or $40 for standalone tickets. Tour times vary with the sunset. Advance registration is required as Pier Walks typically sell out. Birch Aquarium opens daily at 9 a.m.; closing hours vary by day. Purchase tickets online in advance for the best pricing or consider buying an annual membership to the aquarium.
