Rhamondre Stevenson shows why he’s still Patriots’ top running back in win

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson acknowledged he almost scored on a 58-yard catch in the third quarter Sunday, but he “got a little tired.” It’s understandable in the 90-degree Miami heat, and Stevenson was a busy man in the 33-27 win over the Dolphins. He led the Patriots with 54 rushing yards on 11 carries and with 88 receiving yards on five catches. The veteran running back also contributed a key score on a two-point conversion. It’s been tough on me for the last couple months,” Stevenson said, referencing the death of his father, Robert, in March. “But putting my best foot forward and just knowing what my pops would want me to do. He probably would have loved this game. Just remembering that and remembering the things he would say. Just keep going. I think he’d be proud today.” There were some loud whispers for more playing time from rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson after last week’s 20-17 loss to the Raiders, but Stevenson quieted them Sunday. Henderson also had some rookie moments against the Dolphins, getting flagged for two holding penalties in pass protection and another one on a kick return. He also let up a sack to quarterback Drake Maye. Henderson carried the ball three times for 10 yards and caught two passes for 30 yards. Third-string running back Antonio Gibson returned a kick for a 90-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, carried the ball five times for 27 yards and caught one 1-yard pass. “I kind of told the running backs, ‘We’re downhill this first half, and then we’ll try to make something happen,'” Stevenson said. “Just trying to lean on our toughness and make something happen and make the defenders move out of our way.”
