🏠 Affordable housing milestone

Tuesday topics Sep. 17 — This week, we’ve got stories on The City of Atlanta reaching an affordable housing milestone with a new senior development in East Lake, a review of City Springs Theatre Company’s “The Producers,” and the reopening of a beloved gift shop in Buckhead.  First, a few headlines: A groundbreaking ceremony for the new $5 billion Rivian EV plant, which will sit on 2,000 acres along I-20 east of Atlanta and create 7,500 new jobs, was held today. The Atlanta City Council appointed disability advocate Carden Wyckoff to fill Amir Farokhi’s unexpired term representing District 2. The council also approved a $6 million agreement with PATH for the Peachtree Creek Greenway project. Early voting is underway in the runoff election for State Senate District 21. Democrat Debra Shigley and Republican Jason Dickerson are running to replace Republican Brandon Beach.  Along with lane closures along 10th and Piedmont in Midtown for sewer repairs, a major repaving project has kicked off west of Downtown on Perry Boulevard and West Marietta Street. Allow extra time for your journeys. Historic Oakland Cemetery reports that 60% of the niches planned for its new columbarium for cremated remains have already been sold.  Here’s what’s in today’s newsletter. • Affordable senior housing• Theatre Review: ‘The Producers’AND• Swoozie’s reopens Enjoy! The project marks a major milestone on the road to Mayor Andre Dickens’ goal of creating or preserving 20,000 units of affordable housing by 2030. Dickens said the renovation of the Legacy at East Lake apartments places the city at 11,000 units of affordable housing. All 149 units in the complex will be made affordable for seniors 55 and at different levels based on area median income. Atlanta Housing CEO Terri Lee said their goal is to welcome people who have been priced out back into the community.  ➳ Read the full story here. Teach your old fur new tricks! You’ll see a production that Mel Brooks himself would applaud—vigorously,” Harris writes.  ➳ Read his full review here.
