Swiss Air flight out of Logan in Boston slams on the brakes

A Swiss Air jet, accelerating on takeoff, slammed the brakes on Tuesday evening on Runway 22R at Logan Airport, startling passengers who had a jarring start to their Zurich trip. “We were not quite lifting off and the wheels were still on the ground when the pilot immediately hit the brakes,” a passenger in the Boston-to-Zurich flight told the Herald this morning. “We heard a ‘boom,’ and after that is when stuff went flying,” the passenger added. “Fire engines then came racing by.” The Airbus A330-300 taxied back to the gate at Logan International Airport at about 6:30 p.m., and after a 3-hour wait, a new jet was ready to continue the trip. “We were told it had something to do with the engine,” the passenger added from overseas. According to Boston’s NBC 10 (see video), the Federal Aviation Administration said the Swiss International Air Lines flight was disabled on Runway 22R. “The crew of SWISS Flight 55 stopped their takeoff at Boston Logan International Airport due to engine issues around 6:25 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The FAA briefly paused some arrivals to the airport before the plane taxied off the runway,” the agency said in a statement. “The FAA will investigate.” The passenger called the Herald last night and again this morning to report that the sudden stop was jarring but handled smoothly.
