Morning after: Join volunteer cleanup following ‘dirtiest beach day’ of year

(File photo courtesy of Surfrider Foundation) Surfrider Foundation of San Diego County will hold the 19th annual “Morning After Mess” cleanup at beaches from top to bottom in the region. There will be nine official sites to clean up litter after Friday’s Independence Day celebrations – some clustered around viewing points for the Big Bay Boom – from North County down to the South Bay: Oceanside Beach (hosted by Rise Above Plastics) Moonlight Beach, Encinitas (hosted by Bountiful Bag) Pacific Beach (hosted by Paddle for Peace) Mission Beach (hosted by San Diego Coastkeeper) Fiesta Island (hosted by I Love a Clean San Diego) Ocean Beach Pier OB Dog Beach & Estuary (hosted by San Diego River Park Foundation) Seaport Village (hosted by Sally’s Waterfront Dining) Imperial Beach  All take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Register online for your favored cleanup. According to Surfrider, “the 4th of July is the most highly attended beach day of the year —and it leaves behind an oversized mess.” Cleanup supplies are limited and volunteers are asked to bring their own to help out, if possible. Some reuseable goodies will be offered to volunteers. The San Diego chapter launched the regional cleanup in 2006. In one recent year, volunteers collected over 1,700 pounds of trash from local beaches after Fourth of July festivities.
