Massachusetts cemetery’s bronze plaques stolen from headstones: ‘Deeply disturbing’

Bronze plaques from headstones at a local cemetery were recently stolen, according to police who are asking the public for help in the investigation. Newburyport Police over the weekend received reports of two gravestones that appeared to be damaged and vandalized at Oak Hill Cemetery. Police were told that the gravestones from the late 1800s appeared to have had their plaques and headstones forcibly removed. One plaque commemorates English-born author James Parton, who wrote biographies of prominent American political figures. The other gravesite is devoted to members of the Dodge family. “The theft of bronze plaques from headstones at Oak Hill Cemetery is a deeply disturbing act that shows a complete disregard for the memory of those laid to rest and their families,” City Marshal Matthew Simons said in a statement. “I am hopeful that someone may come forward with information that will lead to accountability for those responsible,” Simons added. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Newburyport Police Department at 978-462-4411.
