Alliance Theatre hosts 24th annual Palefsky Collision Project

Courtesy Alliance Theatre The Alliance Theatre will host 20 Atlanta-area teenagers this month for its annual Palefsky Collision Project. Taking place through July 26, the initiative tasks high school and post-secondary students with creating their own unique theatrical piece. Drawing inspiration from Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower (a fictional novel that delves into themes like “community and belonging,” “inequality” and “individual verses collective responsibility,” the Alliance Theatre said), the participants will undergo two weeks of workshops, working with guest artists to help craft their story. After their ideas have been finalized, the students will take part in rehearsals during the third and final week to prepare for public performances of their creative work, which are slated to occur at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Coca-Cola Stage on July 25 and 26. “I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Palefsky Collision Project legacy. Working and creating with teens is one of my favorite types of work. They are smart, curious, and so creative,” said Sam Provenzano, Alliance Theatre director and Palefsky Collision Project leader. “I cannot wait to see what the teens are drawn to in this text and hear what [the ensemble has] to say as they collide with Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower. This piece seems like the perfect frame in which to view our current democracy with a focus on building up one’s community.” Now in its 24th year, the Palefsky Collision Project is an experience that the Alliance Theatre says gives students a “unique theatrical experience” and provides them with “confidence in their talents, strength for the future and power in their decisions.” “Art expands minds, heals hearts, and saves lives — it’s saved mine countless times, and this summer it could save us all,” said Playwright Maya Lawrence, the Alliance Theatre’s resident artist and Allyship Program director. “What’s an ending world to those who’ve inherited the task to create a new one? Let the voices of 20 teens from across our community be the beacon that beckons your belief that not only is better possible, but it is indeed on the way.” Tickets for the public performances are free of charge and can be reserved on the Alliance Theatre’s website.
