Actor’s Express announces show lineup for 38th season

Atlanta theater company Actor’s Express announced the five-show lineup that comprises its upcoming 38th season, set to kickstart in the new year. The season opens Jan. 29, 2026, with Girl From the North Country, a jukebox musical featuring 20 Bob Dylan classics, all re-imagined by playwright Conor McPherson. Girl From the North Country tells the story of a group of travelers that “find respite from the Great Depression in a modest boarding house,” according to a release. From April 9 to May 3, 2026, Actor’s Express will be showcasing Venus, a celestial, dark comedy (created by Atlanta playwright Steve Yockey) about two women who learn “that true love isn’t the only thing that bonds two people together…forever.” In June, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit will hit the main stage, with Atlanta theater veteran Carolyn Cook set to star. It tells the story about a doctor who is forced to face her own vulnerabilities when she is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Later that summer, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Choir Boy makes its return to Atlanta. The coming-of-age drama, interwoven with gospel music, follows a student struggling to find his place at a prestigious prep school, but an opportunity arises when he is chosen to lead the school’s renowned choir. The season closes in October with the world premiere of Jayne Deely’s comedy i never asked for a gofundme, about a small-town misunderstanding that spirals into chaos when gender-affirming top surgery is mistaken for breast cancer treatment. “This season offers opportunities to experience new stories for the first time,” said Freddie Ashley, artistic director of Actor’s Express. “Each production offers a sometimes challenging and always satisfying journey of emotions and ideas.” Alongside the mainstage productions, the theater will also host a variety of holiday programming, including a winter burlesque show, drag duo Olive & Agatha’s A Gay in a Manger, along with the return of Atlanta cabaret legend Libby Whittemore’s annual Ho Ho Home for the Holidays and a Connie Sue Day Christmas.
